PDP criticises Wike over remarks, as Makinde-backed group faults comments and rejects claims about party leadership structure

In a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, the group described the minister’s remarks as careless and inappropriate, accusing him of attacking respected Nigerians without restraint.

The PDP criticises Wike position also extended to the nature of the media engagement itself, which the group claimed lacked seriousness and respect, while suggesting it appeared to have been funded with public resources.

Rather than directly rebutting the minister’s claims, the faction issued an apology to Nigerians for its past support for Wike’s political rise, including his tenure as governor and subsequent appointment as minister.

It said his recent conduct had become increasingly embarrassing at the national level.

The group further advised individuals who feel defamed by the minister’s statements to seek redress through the courts, emphasising that no public office holder is above the law.

On internal party matters, the faction rejected assertions about the existence of a “National Leader” position within the PDP, stating that such a role is not recognised under the party’s constitution.

It maintained that preparations for primaries, the sale of nomination forms and plans for a national convention remain on course.

The statement also suggested that Wike’s recent comments may reflect frustration over his perceived inability to influence the party’s direction, particularly regarding the emergence of its next presidential candidate.

Addressing legal issues referenced by the minister, the group said it is awaiting official court documents and challenged Wike and his allies to clarify the situation publicly.
