The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has voiced its disappointment over the mass defection of Delta State’s Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and other party leaders to the All Progressives Congress (APC)

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed its profound disappointment regarding the mass defection of Delta State’s Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, along with other elected officials and party leaders, to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Acting National Chairman of the PDP, Umar Damagum, conveyed the party’s sentiment during a ceremony in Abuja for the presentation of the Certificate of Return to Mr. Jude Ezenwafor, the PDP’s gubernatorial candidate for the Anambra State governorship election.

Damagum described the mass exodus as both painful and unfortunate, particularly considering the substantial support the PDP had consistently provided to Delta State.

He stated, “It is very sad and unfortunate because to me, if there’s any state that should think that way, not Delta, because the party is very magnanimous.”

He further noted with a degree of relief that the defecting members did not cite any wrongdoing by the party as the reason for their departure, acknowledging the support extended to the state.

“I thank God that in their message, they didn’t say that the party did anything wrong to them other than good. It’s a decision taken by them, but the pains will be in us not because of anything, but because we gave Delta all our support, from the emergence of the governor to his predecessor, who also doubled as our vice presidential candidate.

It is very sad and unfortunate because to me, if there’s any state that should think that way, not Delta, because the party is very magnanimous,” – Umar Damagum, Acting National Chairman of PDP.

We least expected this action from them. All the same, this is a party that have seen more than that, but it’s still standing,” Damagum affirmed.

The Acting National Chairman also announced that the party’s leadership is currently taking stock and will promptly establish a caretaker committee to manage the party’s affairs in Delta State. “I want to use this opportunity to say, we’ll take over our structures immediately,” he declared.

Looking ahead to the 2027 elections, Damagum emphasized that the focus would be on the Nigerian populace rather than solely on the number of governors a party holds.

He urged all PDP members to unite and work towards rescuing Nigeria, expressing confidence that no challenge is insurmountable.

Damagum concluded by congratulating Mr. Jude Ezenwafor on his emergence as the party’s candidate for the Anambra governorship election, expressing his confidence in the party’s victory in the upcoming polls.
