Niger road attack fears rise after police recover nine bodies along the Wawa-Lumma road in Borgu Local Government Area

Niger State Police Command on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, confirmed the recovery of nine dead bodies along the Wawa-Lumma road in Borgu Local Government Area, after the victims were suspected to have been killed by bandits while travelling through the area.

Police Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the discovery in an interview on Wednesday, saying police and military personnel had been deployed to evacuate the bodies after receiving information about the incident on Tuesday.

The identities of the victims and the circumstances surrounding their deaths had not been officially established at the time of the report.

According to the police, the bodies were found along the road, with preliminary indications pointing to a possible attack by bandits operating in the area.

“Police and military tactical teams were mobilised to the scene; the bodies recovered, while clearance operation was intensified to secure the area,” Abiodun said.

The recovery has heightened concern over security along the route, particularly as criminal groups continue to pose a threat to travellers and communities in parts of Niger State.

Police and military teams have subsequently intensified clearance operations in the area in an effort to prevent further attacks and secure the route.

The Niger State Police Command has not disclosed whether any suspects have been arrested in connection with the deaths.

The incident also comes against the backdrop of persistent security challenges across parts of the state, where security forces have continued to conduct operations against banditry, kidnapping and other forms of violent crime.

Authorities are expected to provide further details as investigations into the deaths progress and efforts to establish the identities of the victims continue.
