Real Madrid election process begins as Florentino Pérez seeks re-election while potential challengers consider bids for club presidency

Real Madrid CF has officially launched its presidential election process following the announcement that club president Florentino Pérez will seek another term in office.

The club confirmed on Thursday that a 10-day window, ending May 23, has been opened for the submission of candidacies as part of its formal electoral procedure.

The development sets the stage for a potentially competitive race at one of football’s most powerful institutions, although Pérez currently remains the frontrunner.

Candidates wishing to contest the presidency must have been club members for at least 20 years and provide a financial guarantee of €187 million, equivalent to 15 percent of the club’s annual budget, backed by personal assets.

Pérez, who was re-elected unopposed in January 2025 for a four-year term, confirmed earlier in the week that he intends to stand again.

Spanish media reports suggest that Enrique Riquelme, president of the Cox energy and water group, is considering entering the race, though no formal declaration has been made.

In a public letter, Riquelme requested additional time to prepare a possible candidacy, adding uncertainty to the early stage of the process.

Responding to speculation, Pérez maintained confidence in his position, stating in an interview with La Sexta that he did not seek extensions when he first ran in 2000 and went on to win the election.

If multiple candidates emerge, the electoral board will announce the date and venue for voting. If no challenger steps forward, Pérez is expected to retain the presidency unopposed.

First elected in 2000, Pérez oversaw Real Madrid’s Galáctico era before briefly stepping down in 2006 and returning in 2009.

Since his return, the club has enjoyed a dominant period, winning multiple league titles and six European Cup triumphs.
