Rivers State Emergency Management Agency aims to boost flood safety with proactive plans and stronger community participation

Rivers State Emergency Management Agency is set to become the state’s primary body for tackling flood risks and disaster response.

The initiative, announced by Administrator Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.), will replace the Central Working Committee on Emergency Preparedness, Flood Management, and Control.

Speaking in Port Harcourt, Ibas represented by Secretary to the State Government Prof. Ibibia Worika said the agency will work closely with the Federal Government and international partners to mobilise resources.

Plans include early warning systems, pre-flood precautions, emergency interventions, and post-flood recovery efforts.

He emphasised that this proactive approach will focus on awareness, prevention, and equipping residents with the tools to safeguard themselves.

“We must go beyond merely responding to disasters,” he said.

The administrator also announced stricter enforcement of environmental laws to curb illegal dumping and construction on flood-prone areas.

He stressed that effective flood management depends on collaboration among government, communities, civil society, and the private sector.
