President Tinubu expresses heartfelt condolences to Samuel Chukwueze and family following the loss of his mother

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, alongside the Nigeria Football Federation and the National Sports Commission, has extended heartfelt condolences to Super Eagles forward Samuel Chukwueze following the passing of his mother, Mrs Sarah Chukwueze, The PUNCH reports.

In a statement released on Thursday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Tinubu described the loss as a significant blow to both the family and the broader Nigerian football community.

Mrs Chukwueze passed away after a brief illness earlier on Thursday.

“The passing of Mrs Chukwueze, mother of one of our bright football stars, just a few days after the passing of Super Eagles’ captain Wilfred Ndidi’s father, is deeply saddening,” Tinubu said, offering personal prayers and support to the grieving families.

Tinubu urged the Chukwueze family to “find solace in the memory and legacy” of their late matriarch and assured them of his spiritual solidarity during this difficult time.

The news of Mrs Chukwueze’s death was first shared publicly by her children, Princess Chukwueze and David Chukwueze, through emotional posts on Instagram.

David Chukwueze expressed his grief, writing, “Can’t even post your picture to say RIP mum” and reflecting on the loss of the opportunity for his mother to meet her grandchild.

Dr Mohammed Sanusi, general secretary of the Nigeria Football Federation, described Mrs Chukwueze as a vital support figure in her children’s lives, particularly for Samuel Chukwueze.

“Samuel has always acknowledged his mother’s influence on his professional development. We are saddened by her departure,” Sanusi said.

The National Sports Commission echoed these sentiments, noting the enduring impact of family in shaping Nigeria’s elite athletes.

“Across the landscape of Nigerian sport, the role of family remains central. Mrs Chukwueze’s influence on her son’s journey is acknowledged and respected by the sports community,” the commission stated.
