The attack occurred at about 11:30pm on Saturday, August 29, when suspected bandits reportedly stormed the town and fired sporadically into the air, according to the command.

Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said the attackers abducted Nadabo during the assault and shot three residents.

The injured residents were identified as Yusif Nasiru, 20, Salisu Garba, 20, and Ibrahim Hassan, 20, all residents of Garun Mallam Town.

The police said officers, working alongside members of the local community, immediately pursued the attackers.

The pressure from the security team and local residents reportedly forced the suspects to abandon the traditional ruler before fleeing the area.

“Consequently, the bandits abandoned the kidnapped victims and fled the scene. Alhaji Yusif Nadabo was rescued unhurt,” the command said.

Following the incident, the police deployed confidence-building patrols in and around Garun Mallam Town as part of measures to prevent another breach of security.

A manhunt has also been launched for the fleeing suspects, while an investigation into the attack continues.

Kano State Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, commended the police teams for their prompt response and praised residents of Garun Mallam and neighbouring communities for assisting the operation.

Bakori also recognised the contribution of members of the Vigilante and Neighbourhood Watch Corps, describing their vigilance, bravery and cooperation as important to the rescue effort.

He urged residents to remain calm and continue providing credible information that could help security agencies identify and arrest those responsible for the attack.

The incident comes amid continuing security concerns across parts of northern Nigeria, where rural communities and travellers have faced attacks, abductions and other forms of criminal violence.

For Garun Mallam residents, however, the immediate focus is on restoring confidence and ensuring that the attackers are brought to justice.
