SDP urges Nigerians to insist on real-time election results to prevent manipulation and uphold democratic credibility ahead of 2027 polls

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has urged Nigerians to insist on the real-time transmission of election results to prevent a repeat of the credibility challenges experienced in the 2023 general elections.

Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, National Publicity Secretary of SDP, made the call in a statement to DAILY POST on Friday, warning that resistance to electronic transmission undermines Nigeria’s democratic progress.

The Senate recently passed the Electoral Act amendment bill, but controversy has emerged over the adoption of real-time electronic transmission.

Yemi Adaramodu, a member of the Senate Committee on Media and Publicity, cited network challenges as a key obstacle to e-transmission.

SDP expressed deep concern that the Senate’s stance runs counter to the popular will, noting that real-time transmission would reduce opportunities for result manipulation during manual transportation.

“It is mindful that eternal vigilance is the price for freedom. The SDP calls on citizens, civil society groups, and all democrats to resist the actions of a few who prioritise personal interests over the nation’s true interest,” the party said.

The statement concluded with a warning that Nigeria cannot afford a repeat of the 2023 electoral experience, stressing the importance of credible processes for the 2027 general elections.
