Senator Sunday Katung defects to APC from PDP, citing unity, collaboration, and effective service delivery to Kaduna South constituents

Senator Sunday Katung has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the decision as “difficult but ultimately necessary” for the progress of his constituents in Kaduna South Senatorial District.

In a statement shared on his X handle, #smkatung, and dated October 31, 2025, the lawmaker titled his announcement “A New Chapter: A Message of Unity and Purpose.”

He said the move followed deep consultations with community leaders, stakeholders, and political associates who urged him to align with the ruling party.

According to Senator Sunday Katung, his defection was motivated by a desire to ensure that the voices of his people are represented more effectively “at the highest decision-making tables where the destinies of our communities are being shaped.”

The senator added that both President Bola Tinubu and Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani had shown “special interest in collaborating with us to bring about phenomenal and epoch-making development.”

Katung, who was joined in the defection by Daniel Amos and other Kaduna State Assembly members, praised the APC’s “developmental footprints” across Kaduna South, describing them as evidence of a genuine commitment to inclusion, equity, and progress.

He stated that the era of exclusion in governance was giving way to “purposeful leadership and partnership” and pledged to work towards sustaining and expanding the developmental gains already achieved in the zone.

Acknowledging that some supporters may feel disappointed by his move, Senator Sunday Katung appealed for understanding and unity, quoting Thomas Jefferson:

“I never considered a difference of opinion in politics, in religion, or in philosophy as cause for withdrawing from a friend.”

He urged his constituents to embrace mutual respect and maintain enduring friendships across political divides while assuring them of his continued dedication to “a better future for the people of Kaduna South.”

Earlier in October, the Forum of Southern Kaduna Professors had encouraged Katung to join the APC, describing the potential switch as a “strategic alignment” with the Tinubu administration for the region’s advancement.
