Shell SNEPCo Bonga FPSO turnaround completed safely, ahead of schedule, resuming production and boosting Nigeria’s deepwater oil operations

Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company Limited has successfully completed turnaround maintenance on the Bonga Floating Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel, resuming production at Nigeria’s premier deepwater field on March 6, 2026.

The project was delivered 11 days ahead of schedule and without any safety incidents, reinforcing SNEPCo’s commitment to operational excellence and asset integrity.

SNEPCo Managing Director, Ronald Adams, said the completion “is a testament to the dedication and professionalism of her Nigerian workforce and the helpful support of our partners.”

He added that the achievement not only secures the long‑term integrity of the Bonga FPSO but also strengthens the delivery of the Bonga North project, leveraging the enhanced reliability of the facility.

The turnaround maintenance, which began on February 1, 2026, involved over 1,000 personnel offshore, more than 95 per cent of whom were Nigerians engaged in engineering, operations, inspection, maintenance, and construction.

Thousands more supported onshore operations, highlighting the depth of Nigerian expertise in deepwater oil and gas.

Of the 55 companies involved, 43 were wholly Nigerian, while eight of the 12 international service providers maintained operational bases in Nigeria, supporting knowledge transfer and local investment.

Adams acknowledged the contributions of key stakeholders, including the NNPC Upstream Investment Management Services (NUIMS), the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB), and other partners.
