Spyro reveals his battle with fear of failure and how his father’s harsh words affected his confidence before his rise to fame with ‘Who Is Your Guy’

Spyro fear of failure Nigerian singer Oludipe David, popularly known as Spyro, has opened up about his deep-rooted fear of failure and how his father’s harsh words shaped his early life and self-esteem.

Speaking in a candid interview with veteran broadcaster Frank Edoho, the Who Is Your Guy crooner revealed that his father was often hard on him while growing up, using negative utterances whenever he tried to correct him.

The singer said those repeated comments made him internalise fear and self-doubt, to the point where he began believing he was a failure.

“I thought I was going to die broke. I always had this fear of failure. And my dad contributed to that. He took every opportunity he got to always tell me that I am a failure,” Spyro recalled.

He disclosed that his struggles began during his secondary school years, where he battled poor grades and low self-esteem.

Even after gaining admission into university, he doubted his ability to complete his degree because of the psychological effects of atychiphobia the fear of failure.

Spyro said he eventually overcame those fears after developing a personal relationship with God, which helped him rebuild confidence and purpose.

The singer recounted that before his breakthrough, he had nearly given up on music and ventured into interior design to make ends meet. His fortunes changed when his 2022 hit single, Who Is Your Guy, went viral and catapulted him into the limelight.

The remix of the song, featuring Tiwa Savage, was released in 2023 and became one of the year’s biggest collaborations.

It later earned Spyro the Best Collaboration Award at the 16th Headies Awards, cementing his place among Nigeria’s leading music acts.
