Tinubu 2027 re-election prospects are clear, Wike says, as he dismisses opposition parties as divided and incapable of forming a strong coalition

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has declared that the path to President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027 is clear, arguing that opposition parties remain too divided to pose a serious electoral challenge.

Wike made the remarks on Monday while speaking to journalists after inspecting ongoing projects across Abuja, where he dismissed opposition parties as fragmented groups incapable of building a credible coalition ahead of the next general election.

The minister said recent developments within opposition circles had confirmed his long-held view that attempts to form a united political front were fundamentally flawed.

Mocking rival political groups that had positioned themselves as alternatives to the ruling administration, Wike said they appeared uncertain about their objectives despite promises to deliver change to Nigerians.

“They all gathered and said, ‘This government is not doing well. We are the face of the new people; we are the ones that will give the people the change that they require,’” he said.

According to Wike, recent comments by Babachir Lawal regarding alleged manipulation within opposition ranks exposed deep divisions and undermined claims of a united coalition.

Lawal had reportedly announced his departure from the African Democratic Congress, alleging that the party’s presidential primary process was skewed in favour of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

Reacting to the development, Wike insisted that experienced politicians already understood that the opposition structure was designed to favour Atiku, making any suggestion of a level playing field unrealistic.

“I said it in the morning, if you are a politician, you will understand that the structure was set for Abubakar. There is no need to worry yourself to say you want to participate as a coalition party. There is no coalition,” he stated.

The FCT minister argued that criticisms emerging from within opposition parties themselves demonstrated the extent of internal disagreements and organisational weaknesses.

He described several opposition platforms as “mushroom political parties” struggling with leadership and credibility challenges.

Wike also sought to reassure supporters of the current administration, maintaining that concerns over a possible united opposition challenge were misplaced.

“So, we are happy. You can see the coast is very clear for the President to be re-elected in 2027,” he said.

His comments come amid increasing political realignments and early positioning by parties and aspirants ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
