Babachir Lawal says President Tinubu’s administration is a better option than a possible Atiku presidency ahead of 2027 elections

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has stated that President Bola Tinubu’s administration, despite its challenges, remains a better option than a possible presidency of Atiku Abubakar ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Lawal made the comment during a live appearance on Politics Today, a programme on Channels Television, on Monday.

He said his position was based on a comparative assessment of both political leaders and what their administrations could mean for Nigeria’s future.

According to him, although the current administration has its shortcomings, it would still be preferable to what he described as the potential outcome of an Atiku-led presidency.

“I said it that if it must be, therefore, a choice between Atiku and Tinubu, I believe that Bola Tinubu’s presidency, as bad as it is now on a comparative level, Tinubu would be an excellent President compared to what Atiku would plunge us into,” Lawal said.

He added that political choices often require selecting what he described as the “lesser evil” when options are limited.

“When you are between the devil and the devil and you must go somewhere, what you therefore do is look for a lesser devil,” he added.

Lawal’s remarks come amid renewed political positioning ahead of the 2027 elections, with key political actors already beginning to shape narratives and alliances.

The former SGF has also recently been critical of Atiku Abubakar following developments within opposition party structures.
