Tinubu G20 trip gains attention as the President heads to South Africa and Angola for G20 and AU-EU summits

President Bola Tinubu is set to embark on a high-level diplomatic mission as the Tinubu G20 Trip begins on Wednesday with a two-nation visit to Johannesburg in South Africa and Luanda in Angola.

His itinerary includes participation in the 20th G20 Leaders’ Summit and the 7th African Union–European Union Summit, according to a statement issued on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

Onanuga confirmed that the President’s first stop will be Johannesburg, where he has been invited by President Cyril Ramaphosa, host and current G20 President, to attend this year’s summit.

He added that a similar invitation had previously been extended by Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva during his tenure in 2024.

The landmark G20 Summit, scheduled for 22 and 23 November 2025 at the Johannesburg Expo Centre, will convene leaders of the world’s 20 largest economies alongside the European Union, African Union and major global financial institutions.

The theme, Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability, will shape discussions across three main plenary sessions focusing on inclusive growth, disaster risk reduction, climate transitions, food systems, artificial intelligence, critical minerals and decent work.

The Presidency noted that President Tinubu will also hold bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the summit to advance the Renewed Hope Agenda and deepen cooperation on international peace, security and development.

Following the conclusion of the G20 engagements, the President will proceed to Luanda for the 7th AU–EU Summit set for 24 and 25 November 2025.

The meeting will convene Heads of State and Government, alongside young innovators and civil society groups, to discuss shared challenges affecting the two continents.

Expected areas of focus include climate change, inclusive development, infrastructure, digital economy, manufacturing, agribusiness and the creative sector.

Tinubu will travel with senior government officials including the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar; Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun;

Minister of Solid Minerals, Dele Alake; Minister of Trade and Investment, Jumoke Oduwole; and the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ambassador Mohammed Mohammed.

According to the Presidency, the President will return to Nigeria immediately after the conclusion of both engagements.
