Troops foil ISWAP attack in Borno, intercepting suspected militants along Damboa axis after surveillance-led ambush operation

In Borno State, Nigeria, on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, troops of the 25 Brigade successfully foiled a suspected attack by members of the Islamic State West Africa Province, known as ISWAP, along the Damboa axis following a coordinated surveillance and interception operation.

The incident, reported by security analyst Zagazola Makama via a post on X, occurred on April 5, 2026, at approximately 9:35 pm, when suspected militants were detected advancing towards Damboa town from the Timbuktu Triangle area.

The troops established an ambush along the suspected route of movement, anticipating the advance of the armed group.

According to the report, the suspected attackers were later sighted in a forested location but were forced to retreat towards the Timbuktu Triangle after coming under sustained pressure from the troops.

The swift response disrupted the movement of the group and prevented the execution of the planned attack.

Aerial surveillance assets were also deployed, assisting in tracking the fleeing suspects across the area and providing real-time situational awareness to ground forces.

This coordinated effort contributed to the containment of the threat.

Subsequent operations carried out on April 6 led to the recovery of items believed to have been abandoned by the suspects during their retreat.

Security sources suggested that the encounter may have resulted in casualties among the attackers, although this remains unconfirmed.
