Troops kill bandits rescue victims in Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi and Benue as security forces intensify operations against criminal networks

Troops of Sector 2, Operation Fansan Yamma, have intensified operations across Sokoto, Zamfara and Kebbi states, killing at least six suspected bandits and recovering arms and communication equipment in coordinated offensives conducted this week.

The operations, carried out in collaboration with other security agencies, also led to multiple rescues in Benue and Zamfara states, underscoring a renewed push to dismantle criminal networks and protect vulnerable communities.

In Sokoto State, troops of the COAS Intervention Battalion VII engaged terrorists in two separate encounters at Magonho Forest on March 25, neutralising three bandits and recovering three AK-47 rifles and motorcycles.

Zamfara State recorded further breakthroughs as troops laid an ambush along the Gada Maya–Makakari road, killing two suspected terrorists and forcing others to flee.

Recovered items included an AK-47 rifle, magazines, 55 rounds of ammunition, a Baofeng radio, mobile phones and a motorcycle.

Later the same day, troops foiled a retaliatory attack on Kaida Village, where assailants had accused residents of collaborating with security forces.

One additional suspect was killed and another rifle recovered, while a separate clearance operation in Dutsi Village, Zurmi Local Government Area, forced fleeing fighters to abandon weapons under sustained military pressure.

In Kebbi State, troops responding to intelligence on the presence of the Lakurawa terrorist group in Giron Masa community, Shanga Local Government Area, encountered a fierce ambush approximately 500 metres from the village.

Despite the surprise attack, the troops held their ground as reinforcements and combat support were swiftly deployed.

According to Olaniyi Osoba, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, 8 Division, the operations demonstrate the military’s resolve to dominate the battlespace and degrade terrorist capabilities.

“Our troops have remained resolute and undeterred in the face of provocation. The ongoing operations are a clear indication of our commitment to neutralising terrorist elements and restoring lasting peace across the North-West,” Osoba said.

In a related development, troops of Operation Whirl Stroke, working with the Benue Civil Protection Guard, rescued a 28-year-old kidnapping victim, Member Ityavber, in Tse-Ubena village, Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State, and arrested two suspected armed herders.

The rescue followed a targeted operation based on credible intelligence, during which troops discovered an abandoned criminal hideout and extended clearance operations across River Akpako.

Force Commander of the task force, Moses Gara, commended the troops for their professionalism and swift response.

Meanwhile, police in Zamfara State rescued a housewife and her six children abducted in Damba town, Gusau Local Government Area, after engaging suspected bandits in a fierce confrontation.

Police spokesperson Yazid Abubakar said the victims were safely recovered unhurt after the attackers were forced to flee.

Security authorities say intelligence-driven operations are ongoing to track down fleeing fighters, particularly those linked to the Kebbi ambush, with assurances that the crackdown will continue until criminal elements are decisively dismantled.
