FRSC secures one-month sentence after passengers and eight motorcycles are discovered concealed under truck covering

A truck driver, Umar Muhammadu, has been jailed for one month after Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) marshals discovered 15 passengers and eight motorcycles dangerously concealed beneath the covering of his Mitsubishi truck during an enforcement operation in the Federal Capital Territory.

The discovery, involving the truck marked GDD 815 ZP, was disclosed by the FRSC on Saturday, with footage released by the Corps showing officers pulling back a large green cover to reveal passengers hidden among sacks and motorcycles in the cargo area.

According to the Corps Public Education Officer, Osondu Ohaeri, the vehicle attracted the attention of FRSC personnel because of its sealed “trampoline”, prompting marshals to carry out a closer inspection.

“Beneath the covering, Marshals discovered 15 persons and eight motorcycles dangerously concealed among goods, in clear violation of road safety regulations and with grave implications for the safety of the occupants and other road users,” Ohaeri said.

The passengers were allegedly being transported in a section of the vehicle designed for carrying goods rather than people, exposing them to significant risks in the event of a collision, sudden braking or other road emergencies.

Ohaeri said Muhammadu was also unable to produce a valid driver’s licence and allegedly attempted to induce an FRSC marshal with N500 during the enforcement operation.

The driver was subsequently arrested, while the truck and its occupants were handed over to the Divisional Police Officer in Mararaba, CSP M. Daniel, for further investigation and prosecution.

The action followed a directive from the Sector Commander, RS7.1 FCT, CC Tijjani Iliyasu.

The incident forms part of a wider enforcement effort by the FRSC against practices that put commercial passengers and other road users at risk.

In a separate case in Abia State, a Mobile Court sentenced commercial driver Azubuike Dominic to one month in prison after he was apprehended for driving without a valid licence and allegedly absconded with the FRSC marshal who was escorting him to court.

Dominic was later reapprehended several kilometres away following a coordinated pursuit involving FRSC personnel and the military.

The Mobile Court, presided over by His Worship C. E. Nwankpa, subsequently sentenced Dominic to one month at Afara Correctional Centre.

The FRSC said the two cases underscored its determination to confront dangerous driving practices through intelligence-led enforcement, prosecution and cooperation with other security agencies.

The Corps particularly warned commercial vehicle operators against concealing passengers or motorcycles inside vehicles, overloading, driving without valid licences and attempting to influence enforcement officers with money.

The discovery of the 15 passengers also highlights a recurring road safety concern in Nigeria, where the pressure to maximise commercial trips can sometimes encourage operators to use cargo spaces for passenger transportation.

Such practices can turn ordinary journeys into potentially dangerous situations, particularly when passengers are placed in poorly ventilated or unsecured sections of vehicles.

The Truck Driver Jailed after the latest enforcement operation therefore reflects more than a single prosecution. It also signals the consequences the FRSC says commercial operators face when they disregard basic safety requirements in pursuit of profit.
