England manager Thomas Tuchel has stated that Jude Bellingham is not guaranteed a starting place for the national team at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, as competition for positions intensifies within the squad.

The Real Madrid midfielder, who captained England for part of their 1-0 friendly win over New Zealand, has been identified by Tuchel as one of several players competing for a place in the starting XI.

Bellingham featured in only four of England’s eight World Cup qualifying matches, with Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Rogers often preferred in the No.10 role during the campaign.

Speaking after the friendly in Tampa, Tuchel made it clear that no player is assured of a starting role, despite their reputation or status.

“Yes, he has,” Tuchel said when asked if Bellingham faced competition for a place. “He is one of the starters, he knows he is one of the starters, but we have 14 or 15 potential starters.”

The England coach added that team selection remains flexible ahead of the tournament, with performance levels and tactical needs influencing final decisions.

“These roles can always change, but at the moment I think there are like 14 or 15 proper starters and Jude is one of them,” he said.

Tuchel also praised Bellingham’s recent form and fitness, noting that the midfielder appears refreshed following a break from action.

“He looks good. He looks good in training,” Tuchel said. “He is at the moment in a sweet spot because he has had his break and he has the hunger to be back on the pitch.”

The manager further explained that he views the England squad in three distinct groups, consisting of potential starters, impact players, and those who provide energy off the bench.

He added that players have been informed of their roles ahead of the tournament, although adjustments may still be made before the World Cup begins.
