Turkish Ambassador Visa Policy boosts economic ties as Ankara allows its Abuja embassy to issue visas directly to Nigerian business travellers

Turkish Ambassador Visa Policy has taken a significant step forward as Ankara authorised its embassy in Abuja to begin issuing visas directly to Nigerian business travellers, a move described as an important boost for commercial cooperation between both nations.

The Turkish Ambassador to Nigeria, Mehmet Poroy, announced the development during a courtesy visit to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, in Abuja on Monday.

Poroy, who has been in Nigeria for about six months, said the new arrangement will eliminate the previous requirement for visa clearance from Ankara, thereby creating a smoother and more predictable process for business visitors.

He noted that although economic ties have grown steadily, both countries were still operating below their full potential.

He explained that the embassy now has the authority to issue visas directly under specific conditions, a power he described as a powerful step toward improving people-to-people and business-to-business engagement.

According to him, closer economic cooperation remains central to Turkey’s long-term vision for its partnership with Nigeria.

The ambassador further revealed that Turkey is finalising internal procedures to establish a Consulate-General in Lagos.

He described the forthcoming consular office as a practical expansion that will strengthen diplomatic presence and improve services for travellers and businesses, particularly in Nigeria’s commercial capital.

Poroy also expressed appreciation for what he called the consistent support enjoyed by Turkish nationals in Abuja, adding that he expected his assignment in Nigeria to be both productive and rewarding.

Responding, Wike welcomed the ambassador and reaffirmed the FCT Administration’s willingness to deepen economic ties with Turkey, including exploring cooperation opportunities with major commercial hubs such as Istanbul.

He stressed that Abuja remains committed to offering a stable environment where legitimate businesses, including those owned by Turkish nationals, can operate without interference.

The minister commended Turkey’s decision to simplify its visa process, observing that Nigerians—especially business travellers—have long faced difficulties securing travel documents.

He said the new system would encourage increased commercial engagement and smoother travel arrangements for those seeking opportunities in Turkey.

Wike assured the ambassador of continued support from the FCT Administration in any initiative aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation. Poroy was accompanied on the visit by Hakan Tok, Secretary at the Turkish Embassy.
