UK Government warns international students to leave the country when their visa expires—or face enforced removal—as part of a major new immigration crackdown.

The unprecedented move, first reported by the BBC, targets what the Home Office describes as a “concerning trend” of student visa holders attempting to remain in the UK by claiming asylum.

In a campaign described as “robust,” the Home Office is now directly contacting tens of thousands of international students via text and email.

The messages clearly state: “If you have no legal right to remain in the UK, you must leave. If you don’t, we will remove you.”

Government data reveals that last year, approximately 16,000 asylum claims about 15% of all applications came from people who originally entered the UK on student visas.

While not all were made after visas expired, officials say the pattern is too clear to ignore.

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper emphasized that while the UK remains committed to supporting genuine refugees, the asylum system is not a backdoor for staying post-study. “Some students are claiming asylum even when nothing has changed in their home country,” she said.

More than 10,000 students have already received removal warnings.

Another 130,000 students and their dependents are expected to be contacted in the coming months, particularly during the autumn academic intake.

The UK Government warns international students that asylum claims deemed “lacking merit” will be swiftly and robustly refused.

Additionally, access to asylum support will depend on meeting strict destitution criteria.

Officials argue that this trend is adding to the already overstretched asylum housing network, including hotels.

Of the 108,000 asylum applications made in the UK last year, around 40,000 were from people who entered legally mostly on study, work, or visitor visas.

While small boat crossings have dominated headlines, the data shows that student visa holders now represent the largest group among legal entrants applying for asylum—a number nearly six times higher than in 2020.

This effort is part of a wider Labour-led immigration overhaul.

In May, the Home Office introduced tougher requirements for universities to maintain their visa sponsorship rights, including higher thresholds on course completion and visa refusals.

Additionally, the post-study work period for overseas graduates has been cut from two years to 18 months.
