UNICROSS road accident tragedy in Cross River claims students and staff, prompting Governor Bassey Otu’s condolence and state response

Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State has expressed deep sorrow over a fatal road accident involving students and a staff member of the University of Cross River State, describing the incident as a devastating loss that has plunged the state into mourning.

The UNICROSS road accident tragedy Cross River occurred along the Calabar–Itu Highway, where a coaster bus conveying students collided with a container truck, resulting in multiple fatalities and injuries among returning students.

In a statement shared on Facebook on Sunday, Governor Bassey Otu said he received the news with a “deeply broken heart”, lamenting the loss of young lives whose futures, he said, were filled with promise and potential.

The governor noted that the victims included both students and a dedicated staff member, stressing that their deaths represented a painful blow not only to their families but to the entire state community.

According to reports, the accident claimed the lives of at least three students and a staff member, including members of the Students’ Union Government who were returning from an official assignment in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

Among the deceased were Solomon Uya, the SUG Director of Sports; Lucky Erim, a Chemistry student and faculty president; Favour Darlington from the Department of Educational Management; and Mr Anthony Arikpo, a staff member who was driving the vehicle.

Governor Bassey Otu extended condolences to the bereaved families and the university community, stating that Cross River State stands in solidarity with all those affected by the tragedy.

He also prayed for the speedy recovery of survivors receiving medical treatment.

The governor assured that his administration would continue to engage relevant authorities in response to the incident, as investigations into the crash continue.

Police authorities have confirmed that inquiries are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the collision, while efforts are underway to trace the driver of the container truck, who reportedly fled the scene.
