United Nigeria Airlines safety meeting with FAAN addresses bird strikes, airport infrastructure gaps, and plans for a local MRO facility

United Nigeria Airlines has engaged the leadership of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria to address escalating operational and safety concerns following recent bird strikes that grounded four aircraft.

The meeting at FAAN headquarters in Lagos brought together United Nigeria Airlines’ Chairman, Prof Obiora Okonkwo, and FAAN’s Managing Director/Chief Executive, Mrs Olubunmi Kuku, alongside senior management teams from both organisations.

Prof Okonkwo highlighted that bird strikes have disrupted schedules and imposed financial burdens, noting the wider industry challenge they represent.

“When an aircraft is grounded unexpectedly, it disrupts schedules, inconveniences passengers, and places enormous pressure on fleet availability,” he said.

The airline also raised issues related to sunrise and sunset airports lacking adequate night-time infrastructure, which often result in delays and cancellations.

Prof Okonkwo stressed that limited airfield lighting and facilities at some Category II airports constrain operational efficiency and affect passenger confidence.

Unruly passenger behaviour was also identified as a safety risk requiring firmer enforcement and industry-wide deterrence.

In addition, United Nigeria Airlines formally requested land in Abuja to establish a Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility, aiming to enhance local aircraft maintenance capacity and reduce reliance on foreign providers.

FAAN Managing Director Mrs Olubunmi Kuku emphasised the importance of collaboration between airlines and airport authorities. “Collaboration is key.

We have identified major causes of bird strikes and are implementing environmental control measures, including improved grass and habitat management around airport environments,” she said.

Mrs Kuku also pledged upgrades to airfield lighting at Category II airports, including apron and lighting improvements at Benin Airport and enhancements in Jos to support extended operations.

She confirmed stricter enforcement against unruly passengers and expressed willingness to review the airline’s MRO land request.

United Nigeria Airlines’ Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer, Osita Okonkwo, described the engagement as timely, stressing the need for sustained cooperation to ensure safe and efficient industry growth.

Other members of the airline’s delegation included Director of Administration, Linus Awute; Director of Flight Operations, Capt Ahmad Mahmoud; Chief Commercial Officer, Raphael Uchegbu; and Director of Human Resources, Kelechi Violet Asuquo.
