The US Embassy in Abuja and Consulate in Lagos will be closed on February 16, 2026, for Presidents’ Day, honoring past U.S. presidents and their leadership

The United States Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Monday, February 16, 2026, in observance of Presidents’ Day.

The announcement was shared on the mission’s official X page on Sunday, noting that the holiday was originally established to honour the birthday of the first U.S. President, George Washington, but has since evolved to celebrate all U.S. presidents and their contributions to both national and global affairs.

The embassy highlighted that George Washington created the first “Badge of Military Merit,” later renamed the Purple Heart, which still bears his image today.

Presidents’ Day is observed annually on the third Monday of February in the United States as a federal holiday.

The mission advised the public to plan accordingly, as routine consular services will be unavailable during the closure.
