US Humanitarian Aid for Nigeria receives a boost as Washington unveils over $240m to support emergency relief and vulnerable communities

The United States government has announced more than $240 million in humanitarian and disaster-response funding for Catholic Relief Services (CRS), with Nigeria among the countries set to benefit from the major intervention aimed at supporting vulnerable populations affected by conflict, disease outbreaks, natural disasters and food insecurity.

The funding package was unveiled in Rome on Friday by Ryan Shrum, Senior Bureau Official of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Disaster and Humanitarian Response, alongside senior American diplomats and humanitarian leaders.

According to the U.S. Department of State, the new awards form part of a broader initiative designed to accelerate emergency assistance to communities facing humanitarian crises across the world.

The funding will enable CRS to deliver life-saving support in critical sectors, including food security, nutrition, healthcare, water and sanitation, shelter, and other essential humanitarian services.

Nigeria is expected to benefit from the programme alongside Burma, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Haiti and Sudan, countries that continue to grapple with severe humanitarian challenges.

A key feature of the initiative is a rapid-response mechanism intended to ensure humanitarian assistance can be deployed within 24 hours of a disaster or emergency. U.S. officials said the approach would significantly reduce delays commonly associated with traditional funding and procurement systems.

The US Humanitarian Aid for Nigeria package will also strengthen CRS’s ability to respond swiftly to both sudden disasters and long-running emergencies through its extensive network of local and international partners.

Part of the funding has been earmarked for a global rapid-response fund, allowing humanitarian teams to mobilise resources immediately and deliver assistance without lengthy approval procedures.

Officials noted that CRS operates through more than 160 Caritas chapters worldwide, enabling aid to reach vulnerable communities even in challenging and politically sensitive environments.

The latest allocation complements wider U.S. humanitarian efforts, including approximately $3.8 billion in assistance channelled through the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where Ebola remains a significant public health threat, CRS is already supporting disease-response operations. The newly announced funding is expected to reinforce those efforts while addressing other pressing humanitarian needs.

U.S. officials described the initiative as a powerful step towards making humanitarian assistance faster, more efficient and more accountable. The State Department also praised CRS as a trusted partner with a proven record of delivering aid in some of the world’s most difficult operating environments.
