The US donates $5M to UNICEF to aid 70,000 children suffering acute malnutrition in Northwest Nigeria

The United States’ State Department announced on Thursday, December 4, 2025, a $5 million contribution to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to address acute malnutrition among children in Northwest Nigeria.

The funding will enable UNICEF to deliver lifesaving nutrition support to at least 70,000 children, providing ready-to-use therapeutic food, medicine, and essential humanitarian supplies.

In a statement, the US Mission to Nigeria said the contribution “affirms US global leadership, strength, and compassion,” highlighting the country’s commitment to protecting vulnerable children in crisis-affected areas.

Northwest Nigeria faces severe food insecurity, worsened by conflict and displacement, which disrupt access to farmland and basic services.

UNICEF runs ongoing nutrition programmes in the region to treat children with acute malnutrition, supplying vital medical resources and food support.
