Victor Azubike Awah faces fraud charges in Lagos for allegedly obtaining N27m under false pretence in a land deal. He pleaded not guilty before the court

Victor Azubike Awah, a Lagos-based lawyer, has been arraigned before Justice O. A. Okunuga of the Lagos State High Court, Ikeja, on a six-count charge involving fraud, false pretence, and the issuance of dud cheques totalling ₦27 million.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) charged Awah and his company, Sparkan Ives Limited, with offences bordering on stealing, obtaining money by false pretence, and using fraudulent documents.

According to the charge sheet, the defendant allegedly defrauded Mrs Chioma Genevieve Onwuekwe between October 2024 and February 2025 under the guise of selling a plot of land.

“That you, Victor Azubike Awah, with intent to defraud, obtained the sum of ₦27,000,000 from Mrs Onwuekwe Chioma Genevieve under the false pretence that you had a plot of land for sale, which pretence you knew to be false,” one of the counts read.

The prosecution stated that the act contravened Section 1(1) and is punishable under Section 1(3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act No. 14 of 2006.

Awah, who represented himself in court, pleaded not guilty to all six counts when the charges were read to him.

Following his plea, the prosecution counsel, A. M. Dambuwa, urged the court to fix trial dates and requested that the defendant be remanded in custody pending the hearing of his bail application.

Justice Okunuga subsequently adjourned the matter to December 17 and 18, 2025, for the hearing of the bail application and the commencement of trial.

The judge further ordered that the defendant be remanded in the custody of the EFCC until further notice.

The EFCC described the case as part of its ongoing clampdown on fraudulent real estate schemes in Lagos, warning that legal practitioners found to be involved in such deceptive dealings will face the full weight of the law.
