WAEC Digital Certificate platform launches across West Africa, enabling students to access, verify, and share exam certificates securely online

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) launched its WAEC Digital Certificate platform, WAEC DigiCert, across all member countries, including Nigeria, Ghana, The Gambia, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, in Lagos on Tuesday, February 17, 2026.

The initiative provides a mobile and web-based service for students, institutions, and employers to access, verify, and request digital forms of original examination certificates.

WAEC Chairman, Professor Patrick Areghan, described the platform as a transformative tool designed to modernise certificate management and reduce administrative delays.

“The WAEC Digital Certificate guarantees authenticity while providing users with significant cost and time benefits,” Professor Areghan said.

The platform allows candidates to recover lost examination numbers, share certificates securely, and verify credentials without visiting WAEC offices.

The council confirmed that traditional printing and issuance of certificates will continue alongside the new digital service.

Following a successful pilot in Nigeria, WAEC DigiCert has received positive feedback from students and educational institutions. The system is accessible on both iOS and Android devices via the App Store and Play Store.

Educational stakeholders praised the platform for its efficiency and potential to prevent fraud in academic verification processes.

Professor Areghan highlighted that WAEC DigiCert is part of a broader effort to digitise educational services across West Africa, ensuring accessibility and reliability for millions of users.

The launch also featured demonstrations of the platform’s user interface, showcasing its ease of navigation and secure verification features.

Observers noted the platform could significantly enhance the transparency and credibility of academic records in the region.
