WAEC revises 2025 WASSCE results following the discovery of a critical marking error that initially reported a dismal 38.32% pass rate.

The West African Examinations Council has now raised the pass rate to an impressive 62.9%, benefiting over 1.9 million candidates who sat for the exam.

Dr. Amos Josiah Dangut, Head of WAEC’s Nigeria National Office, revealed during a press briefing in Lagos that the error was traced to a wrongly assigned serialized code file during the marking of the English Language Objective Test. The council expressed deep regret for the oversight.

The correction significantly improves the outlook for students, with 1,239,884 candidates now meeting the benchmark of credits in five subjects, including English and Mathematics. Female candidates accounted for 53.05% of the successful students.

Despite the improvement, the 2025 pass rate still falls short of the 72.12% recorded in 2024. WAEC emphasized its commitment to transparency, urging candidates to verify their results on www.waecdirect.org within 48 hours.

The council also noted that 9.7% of results remain withheld due to ongoing malpractice investigations, showing a slight improvement over the previous year.
