Yoruba learning game initiative launched by LASUBEB to promote indigenous language teaching in Lagos public schools

The Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board has launched a new partnership with SIKIRABU Africa Ltd to promote the teaching of the Yoruba language in public primary schools through an interactive educational board game.

The initiative, unveiled recently in Lagos, introduces “SIKIRABU,” a culturally themed learning game designed to improve pupils’ understanding of Yoruba language, culture and traditional values through play-based learning.

Speaking at the launch, the Executive Chairman of LASUBEB, Hakeem Shittu, said the Yoruba learning game initiative aligned with the Lagos State Government’s wider efforts to preserve indigenous languages and strengthen cultural identity among young learners.

Shittu described the programme as an innovative and engaging approach to language education, noting that interactive learning tools could make Yoruba lessons more attractive to pupils in public schools.

“Language is a critical part of our identity and heritage,” he said, stressing that the board remained committed to helping children develop interest in indigenous languages from an early age.

According to him, the introduction of the board game would encourage better proficiency in Yoruba while exposing pupils to important cultural values embedded within the language.

The LASUBEB chairman, however, warned against excessive attachment to the game at the expense of academic work.

He urged pupils to maintain moderation and strike a healthy balance between recreation and their studies.

Shittu also appealed to parents to support the initiative by encouraging their children to use the educational tool to deepen their knowledge of Yoruba language and culture.

The Yoruba learning game initiative forms part of ongoing efforts by the Lagos State Government to promote indigenous education through creative teaching methods within the state’s basic education system.

Education stakeholders at the event described the project as a positive step towards preserving local languages at a time when concerns over declining use of indigenous languages among younger generations continue to grow.
