Yusuf, Tinubu meeting sparks renewed defection speculation as the Kano governor holds a private audience with President Tinubu at Aso Rock

Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf on Monday held a private meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, Abuja, amid growing political tension and speculation surrounding his planned defection to the All Progressives Congress.

The Yusuf Tinubu Meeting has intensified debate over the governor’s next political move.

Governor Yusuf was seen arriving at the President’s office at about 4.13pm, dressed in his trademark flowing white babanriga and red Kwankwasiyya cap.

He left the Villa roughly three hours later but declined to address journalists on the outcome of the meeting.

Sources familiar with the development said the governor is expected to return later in the week to brief the President on issues discussed during the closed door engagement, suggesting that negotiations may still be ongoing.

The visit comes against the backdrop of Yusuf’s delayed defection from the New Nigeria People’s Party to the ruling APC. The move, initially expected in early January, has reportedly stalled over disagreements with party leaders at the national level.

According to party insiders, the delay is linked to Yusuf’s insistence on written guarantees, including an automatic APC governorship ticket for the 2027 elections.

He is also said to be demanding the right to nominate a minister for Kano State and to replace existing Kano based federal appointees with his loyalists.

These demands have reportedly created friction within the APC, particularly with influential figures such as Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, who is believed to be nursing governorship ambitions ahead of 2027.

The Yusuf Tinubu Meeting is therefore seen as a crucial attempt to break the deadlock.

Political tension has also deepened within the NNPP. Yusuf’s political mentor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has publicly condemned the planned defection, describing it as a betrayal and warning that the governor would face political consequences if he proceeds.

Reports indicate that Kwankwaso loyalists within Yusuf’s cabinet, including his son Mustapha Kwankwaso, have threatened to resign should the governor formally join the APC.

Meanwhile, an APC chieftain in Kano, Alhassan Ado Doguwa, claimed in a viral video that President Tinubu had ordered the suspension of the party’s e registration exercise in the state until Yusuf officially joins the party. According to him, the President wants the governor to be the first to register.

In a message marking Yusuf’s 63rd birthday earlier in January, President Tinubu praised the Kano governor’s leadership and infrastructural strides, citing urban renewal projects, road construction and reforms in the education sector.

The President described Kano as a stronghold of progressive politics in the North, adding that Yusuf’s administration reflects a commitment to grassroots development and improving the welfare of ordinary citizens.
