Ibom Air unruly passenger incident sparks swift sanctions and reforms as Festus Keyamo orders tougher measures and staff retraining

Ibom Air unruly passenger incident has drawn a sharp response from Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, following a violent altercation on a 10 August flight from Uyo to Lagos.

The incident involved Ms. Comfort Emmanson, also known as Comfort Bob, who allegedly refused to comply with safety instructions to switch off her phone.

The situation escalated into physical assaults on cabin crew and ground staff, prompting swift action from the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the Police.

The NCAA imposed an indefinite domestic and international flight ban on Emmanson, while police arraigned her at the Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on criminal charges. She was remanded at Kirikiri Correctional Centre after failing to meet bail conditions.

Keyamo confirmed he had been in direct contact with top aviation and security officials, praising the speed of the response but condemning the public release of footage showing indecent exposure of the passenger.

“That is totally unacceptable to us,” he posted, ordering an investigation to identify and sanction those responsible for leaking the clip.

In response to the case, the minister ordered airlines to enhance training for front-line staff in public relations and conflict de-escalation.

He also announced plans for a joint security meeting to improve coordination when dealing with disruptive passengers.

Keyamo reminded passengers of existing grievance channels and warned against taking the law into their own hands, pledging longer flight bans and criminal referrals where necessary.

The incident has sparked nationwide debate on passenger conduct, agency responses, and privacy concerns.

Aviation Operators of Nigeria (AON) and Ibom Air have reaffirmed zero-tolerance policies for onboard violence while calling for professional handling of such cases.
