Military pensions board warns pensioners about a fake WhatsApp group impersonating the agency, urging caution and use of official channels

Military pensions board has distanced itself from a fraudulent WhatsApp group falsely operating under its name, warning military pensioners and the general public to stay vigilant.

In a statement issued Monday in Abuja, the Board’s Public Relations Officer, Aliyu Mohammed, made it clear that the group — deceptively titled Military Pensions Board — was created by unknown individuals and holds no official ties to the agency.

Mohammed emphasized that the Military Pensions Board has not created any WhatsApp group for pensioners, veterans, or stakeholders.

He noted that all authentic communication from the MPB is disseminated through verified social media accounts, official press releases, and other recognized channels.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the MPB communicates with pensioners and stakeholders strictly through its official social media handles, press releases, official statements, and recognized communication channels,” he said.

As messaging platforms like WhatsApp become more widespread, cybercriminals have increasingly targeted vulnerable communities — particularly retired military personnel — with false information and financial scams.

These tactics often rely on impersonating official institutions to build trust and extract sensitive data or funds.

The Military Pensions Board has been a central pillar in Nigeria’s effort to ensure that veterans receive their pensions and gratuities accurately and promptly.

Over recent years, the agency has made efforts to modernize, introducing digital payment systems and improving accessibility for pensioners nationwide.

The Board reassured retired service members that their welfare remains a top priority and advised them to verify any suspicious communication directly with the MPB before taking action.

“We urge all pensioners to remain cautious and avoid engaging with any unofficial group or individual claiming to represent the Board,” Mohammed added.

Pensioners are encouraged to report any suspected scams and to only rely on trusted communication channels to avoid falling victim to deception.
