Trump unveiled a Gaza peace plan including ceasefire, Hamas disarmament and Israeli withdrawal, winning cautious backing from Netanyahu

Trump Gaza peace plan took centre stage in Washington on Monday as US President Donald Trump outlined a sweeping proposal to end the war in Gaza, winning cautious backing from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu but leaving many questions unresolved.

The 20-point framework calls for a ceasefire, release of hostages held by Hamas, disarmament of the group, and a gradual Israeli withdrawal from Gaza.

It also proposes the deployment of a temporary international stabilisation force and the creation of a transitional authority headed by Trump himself alongside selected foreign leaders.

“This plan achieves our war aims,” Netanyahu said at a joint press conference in the White House. Yet he warned that Israel would “finish the job” if Hamas rejected the offer or undermined it after agreeing.

Crucially, the plan states Palestinians will not be forced to leave Gaza. Instead, it promises open borders for aid and investment once Israel pulls out, while offering amnesty to Hamas members who renounce violence.

Trump said Arab leaders had expressed support, describing regional approval as “beyond very close.” He emphasised that the deal would give Gaza residents “the opportunity to build a better Gaza.”

Still, Netanyahu was firm that Israeli forces would maintain security control over Gaza “for the foreseeable future” and insisted that neither Hamas nor the Palestinian Authority would govern the enclave.

Trump’s move comes amid visible strains in his relationship with Netanyahu, a long-time ally. The US president has recently warned Israel against West Bank annexation and was angered by an Israeli strike in Qatar, a key US partner.

Meanwhile, fighting continued on the ground. Gaza’s civil defence agency reported at least four people killed in Khan Yunis by Israeli airstrikes on Monday. Residents of the besieged enclave voiced scepticism, with some fearing the plan would favour Israel’s interests.

“I don’t expect anything from Trump, because Trump supports Netanyahu in destroying the Gaza Strip,” said Mohammed Abu Rabee, 34, in Gaza City.

The conflict, triggered by Hamas’s 7 October 2023 attack that killed 1,219 people in Israel, has since left more than 66,000 Palestinians dead, according to figures from Gaza’s health ministry regarded as reliable by the United Nations.
