An Ondo policeman was stabbed to death in Akure. Two suspects have been arrested as police investigate the fatal attack.

A police officer serving in Ondo State has been fatally stabbed in the Arakale area of Akure, the state capital, following an altercation with local individuals, police confirmed on Thursday.

The deceased officer, whose identity has not yet been released, reportedly engaged in a disagreement that escalated into a violent confrontation.

He was stabbed during the incident and later died at a hospital on Wednesday evening.

Olayinka Ayanlade, the state Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed that two suspects have been arrested in connection with the attack.

They are identified as Shina Jacob, 25, and Felix Olalekan, 32.

“The command confirms that an incident occurred involving a police officer performing lawful duty in the area. An altercation ensued between the officer and some recalcitrant individuals, during which the officer was tragically stabbed,” Ayanlade said.

He added that the Commissioner of Police immediately deployed a response team, rescuing the officer and arresting the suspects.

“Despite all efforts, he sadly passed away while receiving treatment,” the spokesman stated.

Ayanlade stressed that the suspects would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.

He also reiterated that the command would act decisively against anyone who attacks police officers in the course of their duties, while maintaining strict adherence to human rights standards by officers.

This incident follows a recent case in Ondo State where a mentally ill individual fatally stabbed a Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps officer.

Nationwide, statistics from 2023-2025 indicate that approximately 242 police officers have been killed by criminals or non-state actors.

The fatal stabbing comes months after an incident in February 2025, when youths set fire to a police station in Ifon town, looting property following the alleged death of a detainee in custody.
