Ighalo backs Osimhen Super Eagles captain, citing his leadership, hunger and influence ahead of AFCON 2025

Former Super Eagles striker Odion Ighalo has tipped Victor Osimhen to become the next captain of Nigeria’s national team, praising the forward’s leadership, hunger and influence on the pitch.

In an interview with Colin Udoh, the 36-year-old said Osimhen’s role goes beyond age or seniority.

“I’m not talking because he’s the eldest. There are players like Ndidi, Moses Simon, Awaziem and Alex Iwobi ahead of him,” Ighalo said.

“But Osimhen is doing well, and he has the courage to demand what the team needs. He’ll speak for the boys, motivate them, and confront anyone necessary, even during matches.”

Ighalo added that being captain carries heavy responsibility, as the player represents the team in dealings with the Nigerian Football Federation.

He said Osimhen possesses the character to advise teammates and set an example through his performances.

The comments come just two days before the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations kicks off.

Nigeria’s leadership vacuum follows the retirements of William Troost-Ekong and Ahmed Musa, leaving the captaincy position open.

Reports suggest head coach Eric Chelle has approved Wilfred Ndidi as the new captain, with Moses Simon and Alex Iwobi as assistants.

It remains unclear whether Osimhen will join the leadership group, with final decisions expected in the coming days.

Osimhen was the last player to arrive at the Super Eagles camp in Fez on Thursday, ahead of Nigeria’s opening match against Tanzania on December 23.

Ighalo retired from international football after the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations but was recalled in 2021, though club commitments prevented his return.

During his career, he represented Nigeria at the 2018 World Cup, was top scorer in the 2019 AFCON qualifiers, and named in the **Team of the Tournament** at AFCON 2019, where Nigeria finished third.
