Wayne Rooney backs Liam Rosenior for the Chelsea job, praising the Strasbourg coach as one of the best managers he has worked with

Former Manchester United and England striker Wayne Rooney has publicly backed Liam Rosenior for the vacant Chelsea managerial position, describing the Strasbourg head coach as one of the finest coaches he has worked with.

Wayne Rooney made the remarks on Monday while speaking on the BBC’s Wayne Rooney Show, as speculation mounts over Chelsea’s next head coach.

Liam Rosenior, 41, currently manages French Ligue 1 side Strasbourg, which shares ownership ties with Chelsea.

The English coach joined Strasbourg in 2024 and has since emerged as a leading contender for the Stamford Bridge role.

According to BBC Sport, Rooney and Rosenior worked closely at Derby County between 2021 and 2022.

During that period, Rosenior served as Rooney’s assistant amid severe financial and sporting challenges at the club.

After Wayne Rooney left Derby, Liam Rosenior took charge as interim manager in League One.

He later secured a permanent managerial role at Hull City before moving to France.

Rooney said Rosenior’s willingness to take risks and his detailed approach set him apart.

“He’s taken chances, and hopefully that pays off,” Rooney said.

“I think Liam is as good a coach as I’ve ever worked with.”

The former England captain praised Rosenior’s attention to detail and daily preparation.

“He’s as good as I’ve worked with,” Rooney added.

Wayne Rooney also stressed Rosenior’s influence on his own managerial tenure at Derby.

He credited Rosenior with leading tactical planning and coaching responsibilities.

“Liam was so important for me,” Rooney said.

“He was incredible in his coaching ability.”

Chelsea are currently without a head coach following the departure of **Enzo Maresca**.

The Premier League club has begun the appointment process, with Liam Rosenior widely viewed as the frontrunner.
