UAE sponsors a Gaza mass wedding for 250 Palestinian couples, offering hope and celebration amid war, displacement and economic hardship

The United Arab Emirates (UAE), through its humanitarian initiative Operation Gallant Knight 3, sponsored a mass wedding for 250 Palestinian couples at the Gaza City beachfront on Friday, November 6, 2026, offering hundreds of newlyweds and their families a rare occasion of happiness amid the destruction, displacement and economic hardship caused by the prolonged conflict in the Gaza Strip.

The ceremony, organised under the initiative’s Thawb Al-Farah 3 (Garment of Joy) programme, brought together couples from different parts of the Palestinian territory, many of whom had postponed their wedding plans because of the financial difficulties and uncertainty created by the war.

According to reports by UAE-based newspaper The National and other regional media, the beachfront celebration featured brides in white wedding gowns carrying bouquets, while the grooms appeared in dark suits, with some wearing traditional Palestinian keffiyeh scarves.

The occasion provided a welcome break from the difficult circumstances confronting many families in Gaza, where prolonged hostilities have disrupted livelihoods, damaged homes and made ordinary milestones, including marriage, increasingly difficult to afford.

For some of the newlyweds, the ceremony represented more than a wedding celebration. It offered an opportunity to begin married life after years of uncertainty and interrupted plans.

A spokesperson for Operation Gallant Knight 3, Azzam Shaath, explained that the initiative was designed to support young Palestinians who could not afford individual wedding ceremonies because of their financial circumstances.

Shaath said the 250 grooms were selected through a public lottery after meeting the programme’s eligibility requirements.

“Many young people are in need and cannot afford the expenses of individual weddings due to their financial circumstances,” he said, adding that the UAE-backed operation would continue supporting Palestinians.

One of the newlyweds, Bahaa Mteir, also expressed appreciation for the occasion, describing the celebration as a welcome moment of happiness after years of hardship.

“It is a wonderful feeling that the UAE has organised a new celebration for the Palestinian people after all the pain, destruction and suffering we have endured,” Mteir said.

The UAE’s diplomatic adviser to President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Dr Anwar Gargash, also described the initiative as part of his country’s continuing humanitarian commitment to the Palestinian people.

“Gaza and its people remain at the heart of the UAE’s humanitarian efforts despite the world’s many crises,” Gargash was quoted as saying on Saturday.

He added that humanitarian assistance should go beyond providing immediate relief to people affected by conflict, stressing the importance of restoring happiness and confidence in the future.

According to Gargash, such efforts should help “bring back a smile and revive hope for a better tomorrow”.

The latest celebration is part of a broader programme of collective weddings organised by the UAE to help young Palestinians establish families despite the economic consequences of the conflict.

In December 2025, the initiative brought together 54 couples for a mass wedding in Khan Younis. Another ceremony followed in April 2026, when 300 couples celebrated their marriages in Deir Al Balah, according to regional media reports.

The latest event therefore represents another phase of the UAE’s efforts to provide social and humanitarian support to Palestinians, particularly young people struggling to rebuild their lives.

The wedding also coincided with the third anniversary of Operation Gallant Knight 3, which was launched on November 5, 2023, under the directives of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to provide humanitarian, medical and food assistance to Palestinians in Gaza.

Figures published by the Emirates News Agency indicate that the operation has delivered more than 136,000 tonnes of humanitarian assistance valued at over $4.16bn since its establishment.

The UAE estimates that its contribution represents approximately 46 per cent of all international humanitarian assistance delivered to the Gaza Strip.

The relief programme has involved deliveries by air, sea and land, including food, medical supplies, shelter materials and other essential items. It has also supported healthcare services, community kitchens and other initiatives aimed at assisting vulnerable residents.

In a further indication of the operation’s continuing activities, four UAE humanitarian convoys carrying 343 tonnes of food and shelter supplies entered Gaza during the first week of November, according to an Emirates News Agency report published on November 2.

While humanitarian assistance remains essential to addressing the immediate needs of people affected by the conflict, initiatives such as the mass wedding also highlight the importance of social support, family life and community resilience.
