The government of United Arab Emirates on Tuesday said it had come under a devastating large-scale drone and missile assault blamed on Iran, with strikes hitting key infrastructure and heightening fears of a wider regional conflict.

Emirati authorities reported that multiple drones and projectiles targeted strategic sites, including a major port facility, where explosions triggered fires and disrupted operations.

The UAE drone attack Iran accusation follows what officials described as a coordinated and dangerous escalation.

Air defence systems intercepted several incoming threats, but some strikes landed, damaging infrastructure and injuring civilians, including foreign nationals. Emergency services were deployed to contain fires and assess the extent of the destruction.

The escalation has intensified tensions across the Gulf, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil shipments. Concerns are mounting over maritime safety and the stability of international energy supplies.

World leaders swiftly condemned the attacks and expressed solidarity with the UAE. Lebanon’s President Joseph Aoun described the strikes as an assault on international law, while Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called for restraint and respect for ceasefire efforts.

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi labelled the attack unacceptable, particularly following reports that Indian nationals were among those injured, and urged the protection of maritime navigation routes.

From Europe, António Costa pressed Tehran to return to negotiations, warning that maintaining stability in the Gulf is essential for global security. Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney described the strikes as unprovoked and called for urgent de-escalation.

The UAE government said the incident represents a serious escalation and signalled its right to respond, even as diplomatic pressure mounts on Iran to halt further aggression.

Tehran has not immediately issued a detailed response to the accusations.

Security analysts warn that the scale and coordination of the assault mark a significant and volatile turning point, raising the risk of direct confrontation between regional powers.
