Iran’s 2026 World Cup participation to be clarified in Zurich talks as FIFA invites FFIRI to resolve outstanding issues ahead of the tournament

The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) has invited the Iranian Football Federation (FFIRI) to its headquarters in Zurich for high-level discussions over Iran’s participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Meeting for the world cup is scheduled to take place before May 20, according to a source cited by AFP, with Iranian football officials expected to engage FIFA leadership on final preparations and outstanding administrative matters ahead of the tournament.

The 2026 World Cup will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19, marking the first edition of the expanded 48-team competition across North America.

Iran’s participation had previously been clouded by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, including renewed conflict involving the United States and Israel earlier in the year, which raised questions about international sporting logistics and travel arrangements.

However, FIFA President Gianni Infantino has publicly confirmed that Iran will take part in the tournament, easing speculation over possible exclusion and reaffirming the country’s qualification status.

Infantino also stated that Iran will play its group-stage matches in the United States as scheduled, offering reassurance to teams, fans, and organisers ahead of the global competition.

Diplomatic issues have also impacted Iran’s recent involvement in FIFA events, including its absence from a FIFA Congress in Vancouver following reported difficulties with Canadian immigration procedures, which Iranian officials described as disrespectful treatment.

Iranian Football Federation president Mehdi Taj is expected to lead discussions in Zurich as part of efforts to address concerns surrounding administrative processes and international participation.

On the sporting front, Iran has been drawn into Group G, where they will face Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand. Their opening fixture is set for June 15 in Los Angeles against New Zealand.
