Iran twice battled back to secure a 2-2 draw against New Zealand in a tense and emotionally charged World Cup Group G opener at the Los Angeles Stadium on Monday, a match heavily overshadowed by political tension, protests and uncertainty surrounding the Iranian team.

The Iranian national team, Team Melli, endured a turbulent build-up to the tournament amid months of geopolitical conflict involving Iran and the United States, raising doubts over their participation before kickoff.

On the pitch, Iran found themselves behind early when New Zealand striker Elijah Just finished a well-worked counterattack involving Chris Wood and Sarpreet Singh to stun the higher-ranked side.

Despite dominating spells of possession, Iran were initially frustrated by a resilient New Zealand defence and missed opportunities, including a Mehdi Taremi effort that struck the post.

Iran eventually restored parity in the 32nd minute through Ramin Rezaeian, who reacted sharply to a rebound inside the box to bring his side level.

New Zealand regained the lead early in the second half through Just, who completed his brace after a slick one-two with Wood following a midfield turnover.

However, Iran responded again with determination, as Mohammad Mohebi powered home a header from a precise cross by Rezaeian to level the match for the second time.

The encounter was played in a charged atmosphere, with political demonstrations outside the stadium and divided reactions inside, where supporters alternated between cheers and boos during the Iranian anthem.

Iran coach Amir Ghalenoei had urged his players to remain focused despite external distractions, and his side showed resilience to avoid defeat in a match that swung repeatedly in momentum.

Both teams pushed for a winner in the closing stages, but New Zealand’s defensive discipline and Iran’s lack of clinical finishing ensured the points were shared.

The result leaves Group G finely poised, with Iran, New Zealand, Egypt and Belgium all still in contention after opening draws.
