At least five people, including three children, die in Lokoja–Ajaokuta road accident; FRSC cites wrongful overtaking as possible cause

At least five people, including three children, have died in a head-on collision on the Lokoja Ajaokuta Road in Kogi State, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed in an official statement on Wednesday.

The accident occurred on Tuesday at approximately 11:40 am in the Gidan Bassa community and involved a Toyota Avensis belonging to Omala Local Government Area and a Sino truck owned by Dangote Cement Plc.

Vehicle registration numbers Kogi BJK172LG and BBR719SA were involved.

Among the fatalities were three children, two females and one male, as well as two adults, one male and one female.

A total of 12 people were involved in the crash, with seven sustaining injuries ranging from fractures and bruises to minor wounds.

The injured were rushed to Ekpe Hospital in Ganaja and ASCO Hospital in Ajaokuta for treatment.

Preliminary investigations by the FRSC attributed the accident to wrongful overtaking.

Four hand-held mobile phones recovered from the scene remain in FRSC custody, while the vehicles and other personal belongings were handed over to police officers from the Ajaokuta Division.

The corps has urged motorists to exercise caution and adhere strictly to traffic regulations, highlighting the fatal consequences of reckless driving.
