CAF has imposed fines and suspensions on Algeria after post-match chaos following their AFCON quarter-final defeat to Nigeria

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) disciplinary committee has imposed heavy sanctions on Algeria following chaotic scenes after their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) quarter-final defeat to Nigeria.

According to the Algerian Football Federation (FAF), the sanctions stem from misconduct involving players, officials, and supporters after Nigeria’s 2–0 victory, which secured the Super Eagles a place in the semi-finals.

CAF handed Algerian goalkeeper Luca Zidane, son of French football legend Zinedine Zidane, a two-match suspension.

Defender Rafik Belghali was also sanctioned with a four-match ban, two of which have been suspended.

Both players will serve their suspensions during the 2027 AFCON qualifying matches, meaning they remain eligible for selection in upcoming World Cup fixtures.

In addition to player sanctions, the FAF was fined a total of $100,000 for the behaviour of the national team, team officials, and sections of Algerian supporters after the final whistle.

The Algerian FA has since confirmed its intention to appeal the ruling, stating that it will pursue all available institutional channels to protect the interests of Algerian football.

The decision underscores CAF’s continued efforts to clamp down on post-match misconduct and ensure discipline at continental competitions.
