FIFA released the updated rankings on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, with Nigeria also slipping two places on the African continent.

The Super Eagles, coached by Éric Chelle, are now ranked sixth in Africa, behind Morocco, Egypt, Senegal, Algeria and Côte d’Ivoire.

Nigeria’s latest slide follows a mixed run of results across three recent international matches, with the team recording one victory, one draw and one defeat.

The Super Eagles began the period with a 2-1 home victory over Madagascar.

However, their positive result was followed by a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau.

Nigeria then produced a more encouraging performance against Russia, battling to a dramatic 3-3 draw in an international friendly on Tuesday.

The result against Russia saw the Super Eagles fight back from behind twice in a six-goal encounter, with Akor Adams scoring a stoppage-time equaliser to rescue the draw.

Despite the late comeback, the overall results were not enough to prevent Nigeria from losing ground in the latest FIFA rankings.

The drop to 30th place represents a setback for Chelle’s side as the team continues preparations for upcoming competitive fixtures and the broader 2027 international calendar.

Nigeria will now look to improve its results in subsequent matches as the Super Eagles seek to climb back up the FIFA rankings and strengthen their position among Africa’s leading national teams.
