Cyclist death Ikeja LASTMA confirms after truck collision under LASUTH Bridge; authorities issue fresh road safety warning

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority confirmed the death of a cyclist following a collision with a DAF articulated truck beneath the LASUTH Bridge along the Airport Road corridor in Ikeja.

Preliminary findings from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority indicated that the cyclist and the heavy duty truck were approaching the roundabout from the Maryland axis at about the same time when the incident occurred.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority stated that the cyclist reportedly failed to maintain a safe distance from the moving truck, leading to a violent impact that crushed the cyclist and caused instant death.

Officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority who were on traffic control duty at the scene intervened swiftly to prevent further disruption and apprehended the truck driver, who allegedly attempted to flee.

The suspect was handed over to officers of the Ikeja Police Division for investigation and possible prosecution in accordance with the law.

To prevent secondary accidents and ease traffic congestion, officials of the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit evacuated the remains of the deceased from the carriageway, restoring order along the busy route.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Mr Sola Giwa, expressed sadness over the loss of life and extended condolences to the family of the deceased. Mr Sola Giwa described the incident as avoidable.

Mr Sola Giwa issued a warning to cyclists and commercial motorcyclists to prioritise safety and comply strictly with traffic regulations, particularly by avoiding highways, expressways and other high speed corridors.

Mr Sola Giwa said the Lagos State Government has intensified public sensitisation campaigns through jingles and documentary messages to educate cyclists and other vulnerable road users on restricting movement to inner roads.

Mr Sola Giwa added that the directive also applies to skateboard users and other non motorised road users.

The Lagos State Government, through the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, reiterated a commitment to strict traffic enforcement, sustained public enlightenment and the protection of all road users, urging motorists, cyclists and pedestrians to act responsibly to prevent avoidable tragedies.
