LAMATA BRT lane abuse warning targets unauthorised users, with stricter enforcement and penalties across Lagos transport corridors

The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority, through its Head of Corporate Communication, Kolawole Ojelabi, has issued a firm warning against the illegal use of Bus Rapid Transit lanes by unauthorised individuals and agencies across the state.

Kolawole Ojelabi announced the directive on Wednesday, stressing that the LAMATA BRT lane abuse warning follows rising cases of violations involving private motorists, local government vehicles, and even security personnel.

The agency reiterated that BRT corridors are strictly reserved for designated buses and franchised operators regulated by LAMATA, with exceptions granted only to emergency response vehicles such as ambulances and fire trucks during active emergencies.

According to the statement, increasing misuse of the lanes has become a growing concern, undermining the efficiency and safety of the transport system.

LAMATA noted that such violations disrupt scheduled services, contribute to traffic congestion, and pose risks to commuters and other road users.

The LAMATA BRT lane abuse warning also emphasised that enforcement would be intensified, with offenders facing penalties regardless of status or affiliation. Sanctions may include fines, vehicle impoundment, and prosecution under Lagos State traffic laws.

Kolawole Ojelabi described the situation as a serious threat to the integrity of the BRT system, which was introduced to provide fast, reliable, and safe mass transit for residents.

The agency urged all road users, including military and paramilitary personnel as well as government institutions, to comply fully with the regulations. LAMATA reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining order, safety, and efficiency within Lagos’ urban transport network.
