Atletico Madrid and Premier League clubs, including Manchester United, target Nigerian-born defender Honest Ahanor ahead of the summer 2026 transfer window

Atletico Madrid have joined Manchester United and other English Premier League clubs in pursuing 18-year-old Nigerian-born defender Honest Ahanor, as the Atalanta centre-back emerges as one of Europe’s most sought-after young talents ahead of the summer transfer window.

According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, Atletico Madrid have intensified scouting efforts, seeing Ahanor as a potential long-term defensive cornerstone.

The defender has impressed in Serie A since joining Atalanta from Genoa last summer, accumulating nearly 1,500 minutes in 24 appearances across all competitions, including the UEFA Champions League.

Premier League clubs, including Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United, and Nottingham Forest, have reportedly dispatched scouts to monitor Ahanor’s progress.

United’s interest coincides with uncertainty over Harry Maguire’s future, while Tottenham and Newcastle weigh defensive options amid speculation around Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, and Fabian Schär.

Ahanor’s contract with Atalanta reportedly includes a release clause between €50 million and €65 million, a figure likely to shape negotiations in what is expected to be a highly competitive summer transfer window.

Atletico are understood to view defensive reinforcements as a priority, particularly with uncertainty surrounding José María Giménez.

Fichajes noted that head coach Diego Simeone values Ahanor’s anticipation and strength in individual duels, qualities consistently demonstrated in Serie A.

Off the pitch, Ahanor has recently become eligible to represent Italy at senior international level after turning 18.

Born in Italy to Nigerian parents, he was previously registered as Nigerian due to immigration regulations, but he is now expected to switch allegiance.

Italy head coach Gennaro Gattuso had previously cited passport limitations as a barrier, which has now been resolved, while Nigeria reportedly sought to secure his commitment.
