Federal Government education support reinforced as Gbajabiamila meets NANS, highlighting student loans, campus security, and moral engagement initiatives

The Federal Government has reiterated its dedication to the education sector, describing it as a cornerstone of the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, during a meeting with the leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students at the State House, Abuja.

The Chief of Staff to the President, Honourable Femi Gbajabiamila, urged student leaders to support government efforts by campaigning against social vices on campuses, including drug abuse, cultism and prostitution, emphasising that tertiary institutions are centres not only for learning but also for character development.

“I want to let you know that education is one of the pillars of this administration. We believe in the youths — the students — your energy and capacity, and we don’t pay lip service to matters like this,” Gbajabiamila said.

He also highlighted the creation of a special committee tasked with addressing rising concerns about social vices in secondary and tertiary institutions nationwide and commended NANS for its constructive engagement with government.

The Chief of Staff further noted that sustained dialogue between the government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities has helped stabilise the university system, with Nigeria approaching three years without a nationwide strike.

He recalled his previous role in ASUU negotiations during his tenure as Speaker of the House of Representatives, emphasising the importance of ensuring students complete academic programmes on schedule.

Gbajabiamila also drew attention to the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, noting that the student loan initiative has enabled indigent students to remain in school, enhancing access and inclusivity.

Speaking alongside him, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Student Engagement, Sunday Asefon, reiterated the Presidency’s commitment to continuous dialogue with students and maintenance of a stable academic calendar.

In his remarks, NANS President, Comrade Olushola Oladoja, praised the government for unprecedented support for students, highlighting stability in tertiary institutions that has allowed many four-year courses to be completed on schedule.

He added that more than 900,000 students have benefited from the student loan scheme.

Oladoja also cited campus security measures, including perimeter fencing for vulnerable institutions following past hostel incursions, and appealed for palliatives for students during the fasting season and increased job opportunities for young graduates.

He disclosed plans for a major student gathering in Abuja to publicly endorse the President’s policies.

The meeting underscores the Federal Government’s approach of combining student welfare, campus security, and engagement with youth organisations to strengthen educational outcomes across Nigeria.
