NANS warns lawmakers in North-East against misusing constituency funds for projects in academic institutions, promising accountability and lawful action

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), North-East zone, has issued a stern warning to public office holders over the alleged diversion of constituency funds under the guise of executing projects in academic institutions.

The statement was delivered by Coordinator of NANS Zone E, Muazu Hina, at a press conference in Gombe on Monday.

Hina said the warning was prompted by concerns that some campus projects lacked transparency, proper consultation, and measurable benefits for students.

“We are giving a final and uncompromising warning to all public office holders across the North-East zone, particularly members of the House of Representatives, Senate and State Houses of Assembly, against using academic institutions as avenues for mismanaging constituency project funds,” he said.

According to Hina, some officials allegedly channelled funds into poorly executed, abandoned, or non-existent projects while presenting them as interventions to improve tertiary infrastructure.

“Our campuses are not platforms for political propaganda or image laundering. Institutions of learning are not dumping grounds for unaccountable projects,” he added.

The students’ body has reportedly begun documenting cases where institutions are allegedly used as cover for questionable constituency projects.

Hina stressed that evidence will be submitted to relevant anti-corruption agencies, and any lawmaker found culpable will face naming, shaming, and lawful mass action.

“This statement serves as a formal notice to all elected representatives: Nigerian students are watching, organising and ready to act until we see accountability, transparency and genuine development in our institutions,” Hina concluded.
