Katsina Zakkat Stampede leaves four dead and 18 injured during Ramadan alms distribution as police begin investigation into the tragedy

Four persons have died and at least 18 others sustained injuries following a tragic Katsina Zakkat Stampede during the annual Ramadan alms distribution at the residence of Alhaji Dahiru Usman Sarki in Kofar Guga Quarters, Katsina metropolis.

The incident occurred at about 9 pm on Thursday when a large crowd gathered to receive Zakkat, an Islamic charitable donation traditionally distributed during the Ramadan period.

Security analyst Zagazola Makama disclosed the development in a post shared on X on Saturday, stating that chaos erupted after some individuals allegedly forced their way into the compound, triggering a sudden rush among attendees.

The Divisional Police Officer of the Central Police Station in Katsina promptly deployed officers to the scene, restoring order and coordinating emergency response efforts.

Eighteen injured victims were evacuated to the General Hospital, Katsina, where medical personnel provided urgent treatment. Doctors later confirmed four fatalities resulting from injuries sustained during the crowd surge.

Police sources identified the deceased as Bilkisu Mamman, 40, from Kerau Quarters; Ihsan Musbahu, 40, of Abattoir Quarters; Aisha Sani, 16, from Kofar Sauri Quarters; and Salamatu Kabir, 45, of Sabuwar Unguwa Quarters.

Another victim, Hafsat Zubairu, 15, from Masanawa Quarters, was referred to the Federal Teaching Hospital for advanced medical care due to the severity of injuries sustained.

Authorities confirmed that organisers of the Zakkat distribution have been invited for questioning as part of an ongoing investigation aimed at determining compliance with crowd control and safety measures.

The Katsina Zakkat Stampede has renewed concerns over safety planning during large-scale charity distributions, particularly during Ramadan when turnout often exceeds expectations.

Community leaders have since called for stronger coordination between organisers and security agencies to prevent similar tragedies.
