Two children drowned in a floodwater collection site on Erediauwa Street, Edo State, while playing. Two others were rescued and treated at a nearby hospital

Two children tragically lost their lives on Sunday after slipping into a floodwater collection site on Erediauwa Street, off Sapele Road, in Ikpoba-Okha LGA.

Eyewitnesses said four children had been playing near the muddy pool when the accident occurred. Two were recovered without signs of life, while the remaining two were rescued and rushed to a nearby hospital, where they were successfully revived.

A source explained that the area, designed for floodwater management, was slippery and unsafe for children:

“No one expected children to be around that spot. It is meant for flood control, and the mud made it very dangerous.”

Confirming the incident, Edo State Police Command spokesperson Eno Ikoedem said emergency responders were deployed immediately.

She added that two children had already died before rescue teams arrived, while the other two were stabilized at a medical facility.

The incident highlights the dangers of flood-prone areas and the urgent need for protective measures in residential communities.
